Showcasing the retail leaders of today and tomorrow

Australia’s retail sector is a major contributor to the nation’s economic health. It is a $240 billion industry, creating over 1.2 million employment opportunities. Each successful retailer benefits an entire supply chain including farmers, manufacturers, suppliers, the local workforce and consumers.

Peak retail industry body the Australian Retailers Association recognised different areas of the sector in the ARA Australian Retail Awards, including Sherryl Munday of HSN Management Pty Ltd as 2011 Deakin University Australian Retail Graduate of the Year.

ARA Executive Director Russell Zimmerman said Sherryl, from Victoria, succeeded in winning the national title over six other state winners who had also completed a Diploma of Retail Management through the ARA Retail Institute:

  • NSW: Gavin Ferguson (Hardware and General Supplies)

  • Victoria: Joint winner Amy Chalmers (Wimmera Foot Clinic, Shoe Co, Urban Nine 4,

  • QLD: Chloe Lockhart (Brisbane Airport Corporation)

  • WA: Anne Thompson (Boyup Brook IGA)

  • SA: Nathan Walker (Radio Rentals)

  • Tasmania: Teresa Wuetschner (Baker's Delight)

‘Through the ARA Retail Institute’s graduate program Diploma of Retail Management as well as her current dedication to working in the retail industry, Sherryl was an obvious choice for this year's top national graduate,’ Zimmerman said.

Steve Ogden-Barnes from Deakin University congratulated Sherryl and said, ‘Sponsoring this award for the first time, we are delighted to be putting support behind a graduate who values education and training and is successfully applying those skills to a “real world” retail environment.’

Sherryl Munday commenced employment with HSN Management Pty Ltd in November 2008. She is the Retail Operations Manager-Retail Pharmacy within the business, which specialises in retail pharmaceutical services. Sherryl successfully graduated from the ARA Retail Institute’s Diploma of Retail Management, and also encouraged and organised for 12 of her team members enrol into the course.

Sherryl took the 2011 award over from the 2010 winner, Lisa Balakas from Ripe Maternity.

Other national award winners announced at the 2011 ARA Australian Retail Awards breakfast included the Visa 2011 Australian Retailer of the year awarded to 7-Eleven, 2011 Australian Independent Retailer of the year awarded to By Dezign, and the 2011 Shopping Centre Council of Australia Retail Employer of the Year awarded to Myer.
