Melbourne Airport

By embracing world class e-learning innovation, a busy airport’s demanding training regime has taken flight.

Ground fog

As one of Australia’s busiest passenger and freight gateways, Melbourne Airport ranks highly in passenger surveys and industry awards.

To achieve this impressive performance, well-trained staff and contractors must ensure the smooth arrival and departure of passengers and visitors each day.

Airside Operations (AO) inspects and maintains all non-public areas of Melbourne Airport (e.g. runways, security fences and equipment).

AO staff must complete compliance training to perform airfield tasks in line with stringent requirements (annually audited by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and the Australian Department of Transport and Regional Services).

AO’s former face-to-face training methods were costly and cumbersome, requiring up to 2.5 hours per participant, per module.

With staff working shifts round the clock, scheduling was difficult and postponements (due to urgent business matters) were common.

To further complicate matters, printed materials and tests had to be manually checked, recorded and stored for compliance verification. This process was labour intensive and error prone.

AO needed an elegant training solution that was flexible to meet business needs yet robust to meet strict competency and auditing requirements.

Cleared for take-off

DeakinCo partnered with AO to develop an innovation solution, implementing 28 interactive online training and testing modules.

From perimeter security to wildlife management, the modules cover a broad spectrum of operational issues using audiovisual content from the site.

Melbourne Airport can now train new and current staff any time, at their own pace, from an onsite training centre – resulting in substantial time and cost savings.

Flying high

The program, now considered Australian aviation’s best, offers a host of unprecedented benefits:

  • dynamic content engages participants – boosting learning, retention and morale
  • scheduling at quiet work periods increased productivity
  • easily updatable content maintains relevance and consistency
  • electronic data boost accuracy, aid reporting and cut administration and paper use.

DeakinCo now plans to offer further modules to cover even more airport operations.
